Sync Google Contacts with Outlook

It has always made me crazy that Outlook doesn’t provide a built-in mechanism to sync with contact providers such as Google. I mean, for how many years do people own smartphones and manage their contacts primarily through them?

Anyways, today I found a great tool that actually does the job pretty well:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/googlesyncmod/

Installation was a matter of

  1. Download the installer
  2. Installing it despite Windows security warning
  3. Providing my Gmail address
  4. Selecting “Merge prompt” as the sync method
  5. Clicking “Sync” button
  6. Authorizing the tool to access Google API on my behalf (oauth2 token)

And that’s it. 5 Minutes later my contacts are ready to rumble in Outlook. Heaven! And a quick test for a backward sync (i.e. changing stuff in Outlook and observing the change on my smartphone) did work, too.
